Chart of the Week — July 15, 2015

The chart below shows the performance of the S&P 500 Health Care sector, as represented by the Exchange Traded Fund called the SPDR Health Care fund (stock symbol XLV), compared to the performance of the entire S&P 500. The S&P 500 Health Care sector currently comprises 15.5% of the total value of the S&P 500. At their peaks, the Energy sector (in 1982) and the Information Technology sector (in 2000) reached more than 30% of the value of the S&P 500. It is possible that the Health Care sector has more room to move higher today, even though the sector has been the best performing sector year-to-date and in 2014.
